The Kearney Mansion Museum sits at 7160 W. Kearney Blvd. in the picturesque Kearney Park, which spans 225 acres. The mansion was built in 1902 for M. Theo Kearney, known as “The Raisin King,” who wanted to erect a larger complex of buildings to be called “Chateau Fresno.” Sadly, only two buildings were completed, but both remain standing today.
Guided tours, given Friday through Sunday, allow visitors to step back in time and see the mansion with many of the original furnishings. This is a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and anyone interested in exploring the rich heritage of Fresno Valley.
Shinzen Japanese Garden
The Shinzen Japanese Garden offers a tranquil oasis that evokes the essence of Japanese culture and design. It is divided into several distinct sections, such as a zen garden, a bonsai exhibit, a wisteria arbor, and a moon bridge. The koi pond is a central part of the garden, where the graceful fish can be seen gliding through peaceful waters.
Visitors can stroll through the gardens at 114 W. Audubon Dr. and enjoy the cherry blossoms in spring, colorful foliage in autumn, and year-round events such as a traditional tea ceremony, ikebana (flower arrangement) demonstrations, martial arts demonstrations, and cultural performances.
Fresno Chaffee Zoo
Found at 894 West Belmont Ave., the Fresno Chaffee Zoo offers visitors a unique opportunity to connect with wildlife, learn about different species, and support conservation efforts. Covering more than 39 acres, the zoo is home to over 200 species.
One popular exhibit is the Sea Lion Cove, home to playful California Sea Lions. Another is the African Adventure, where guests can see giraffes, elephants, lions, cheetahs, and other African species. The zoo also hosts educational events throughout the year.
Forestiere Underground Gardens
This unique attraction showcases the subterranean world created by Sicilian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere. Visitors can explore the underground passages, courtyards, and gardens that were built by hand using simple tools.
You can find the underground gardens at 5021 W. Shaw Ave. Daily tours are given of the vast network of tunnels and passageways spanning 10 acres and going down to depths of 25 feet underground.
